My three sons were all with me as I filled up the van with gas at the local BP station on the southeast corner of Lake Avenue and Skokie Blvd. in Wilmette, IL this afternoon. Our oldest son, Fred IV, had just come from a football game that they won 41-0. He caught his very first touchdown pass as a tight end - which I missed because we were just a few minutes late for the game.
Here's how the numbers worked:
The total charge was $47.73 (4773) which is the EXACT number of days back to 19960901 which was the last day I saw my Dad, Fred Smart, Jr. alive. 19960901 was also the last full day of my late father's life. He and my mother were in Chicago - on the north shore actually - to attend a funeral ceremony for my late Godmother, Sally Burnham. Sally's husband, Hubert "Sailor" Burnham was the great grandson of the famous Chicago architect and business leader, Daniel Burnham who authored "The Plan of Chicago" of 1909.

The cause of death was listed as a "heart attack". My mother called 9/11 and when they paramedics arrived they got his heart going, but it was too late and after they pulled the plugs the following day, 9/03, he was pronounced dead during mid-afternoon while I was in a plane flying from Chicago to Seattle.
